Kuala Lumpur witnessed a dazzling night of music, memories, and unfiltered emotions as Taeyang brought his 2024 THE LIGHT YEAR concert to the AXIATA Arena. The event brought fans from all corners of Malaysia, and the atmosphere was electric even before the concert began.
A Crowd Full of Energy
Fans started gathering at the venue as early as 7 AM, dressed in the concert dress code colors of black, white, and yellow, eagerly queuing for exclusive merchandise. By evening, the stadium was a sea of glowing yellow lights and anticipation. The opening VCR set the tone for the night as Taeyang’s voice echoed, “Finally, I’m coming home.” The stadium erupted into deafening cheers—Taeyang was finally back!
A Glittering Start
Taeyang opened the show with his classic hit Prayer (2010), donning a sequin jacket that shimmered like the sun living up to his nickname “Abang Matahari”. With the opening notes, the crowd was immediately transported back in time, vibing with his OG energy. He then greeted fans in flawless Bahasa Malaysia, saying, “Apa khabar Malaysia?” and shared his excitement about being back after his last solo concert in KL during the White Night tour in 2017.
Taeyang explained that The Light Year tour was a tribute to the journey he has shared with his fans.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
The setlist was a perfect mix of old and new, including Vibe (featuring Jimin), 1AM, Stay With Me (featuring G-Dragon), Make Love, and Inspiration. Fans sang along to every word, but the most emotional moment of the night came when Taeyang performed a medley of BIGBANG songs, including Blue, If You, and Loser. The crowd’s getting emotional especially during If You, a song BIGBANG last performed at the same stadium in 2015, bringing back the vivid memories for the VIP fandom.
A Night of Surprises
Taeyang didn’t hold back when it came to surprises when he performed Where You At, a song he said he rarely performs due to its tough choreography. Then came a heartfelt moment when he sang a cover of Sheila Majid’s Antara Anyer dan Jakarta. With a cheeky twist, he changed the lyrics to Antara Seoul dan Malaysia and revealed that he had worked hard to perfect the BM lyrics for his Malaysian fans.
In another touching moment, Taeyang played the piano for A Fool of Tears, an unexpected addition to the setlist that thrilled longtime fans. But the energy skyrocketed once again when Taeyang brought the house down with BANG BANG BANG and Fantastic Baby, turning the stadium into a dance party for VIPs with their national anthem started playing.
Fan Love and Special Moments
During We Like 2 Party, Taeyang’s playful side shone as he picked up a sunflower hat plushies thrown on stage, wearing it while dancing. He was also teasing fans by picking up his Krunk bear plushies, kissing them before tossing them back. Malaysian VIPs also pulled off a heartwarming fan project during Seed, lighting up the stadium with phone flashlights and banners reading, “Baebaes, let’s light up each other’s heart for Light Year.” The was also a large banner hanging from the 2nd floor saying “Our warm Sun, thank you for coming back to Malaysia. I’ll always wait, see you again”.
A Grand Finale
The night ended with a spectacular encore of five songs. Fans sang along, their voices filling the arena, creating a truly magical moment. Fans screamed for more, and Taeyang didn’t disappoint, treating the fans to a snippet of Home Sweet Home, a new track released with his bandmates G-Dragon and Daesung.
Before the night ended, Taeyang expressed his love for his Malaysian fans: “Thank you, Kuala Lumpur, for being the path in my life and the flower in my heart.”
As the concert closed with a touching VCR featuring all the BIGBANG members during Still Life performance, fans were left with a bittersweet mix of joy and longing. Taeyang promised to return—and hinted at doing his best to bring BIGBANG along next time.
